"Put yourself in his Shoes" means that you should picture yourself in his/her life. Imagine how rough their life must be or how good it is. You could use it in both senses.

For example, there is a bully at a school. He picks on kids, but no one understands why. Someone ask, "Why does he act the way he does?". The teacher might say, "Put yourself in his shoes. His homelife may be in chaos, so he has built up frustrations.".

So whenever you hear that phrase, just imagine yourself going into someone else's life and seeing how things are for that person, both physically and mentally.

Think about how the other person may be feeling or going through. You'll meet people all your life that maybe rub you the wrong way, but then you find out something really bad has happened to them and you understand why they act the why they do. At least that has happened to me in the past with a few people who seemed to have an attitude and few liked.

It means you need to stop viewing the point from your own way, but to see how the other would assess, view, or respond to the situation. EX: As a white man, you can not fully understand the magnitude of slavery. But as a black man, it means alot more to you since it has been a part of your history, and you may have had ancestors unwillingfully partake in the matter, making this event more serious.

Steal his shoes. I have done that on many an occasion when my mom told me to put myself in someone else's shoes. I'm in therapy for kleptomania now.

Imagine yourself going through the same thing he's going through. Imagine you are him for a minute. Then you may be able to see things from his perspective.
