what would be a good illustration to include in a term paper answering the question "what did the salem witch trials reveal about the society in colonial america?"

I would include a point that it revealed a severely unstable religious society. With people caught up in such religious fervor, anyone who differed from their beliefs was immediately cast as an outsider. If you look at a map of the city and see which families did the accusing and which were accused, you will see that their is a defined border in the town between the accusers and the accused.


EDIT: ANovelIdea also has a good point in looking into the Crucible. That illustrates the idea of the instability and religious beliefs extremely well by proving that the town could be unraveled by the false stories of a young girl.

An obvious literary reference would be The Crucible by Arthur Miller, which dealt with the salem witch trials. In it, the inhabitants of the society is stricken with fear and suspicion that they will be the next person to be claimed to be a witch.

I live near Salem, MA:) Check out the websites below they are very informative. They can also give you ideas for pictures. Maybe a pic of a trial. Maybe a noose with a shawdow of people approaching it... like the noose in color and the people in black in white but shadows only.

depict a girl that represents a witch holding a cross with like ghosts or something grotesque near/connected to her pointing at a girl on trial who is the most innocent looking girl ever.

and then say something about under gods oath people always tells the truth
