The panda has a diet that is primarily herbivorous, which consists almost exclusively of bamboo. However, pandas still have the digestive system of a carnivore and do not have the ability to digest cellulose efficiently, and thus derive little energy and little protein from consumption of bamboo. Therefore, they are not lazy, they literally do not have the energy!
Symbolically though, they are very favored. In the past they were thought to be 'rare' and 'noble' creatures, but this is mainly Chinese symbolism, and you mentioned this was some sort of english class so i don't know if looking into that would help.
In more recent times they do still represent 'rarity' (because they are endangered), and also a type of 'innocence' because of their round faces (which helps them eat all that bamboo!) and non aggressive "lazy" stance.
You could also say they are 'protective' because they protect their young fiercely , and 'nurturing' since their babies are pretty much helpless for a long time after birth, unlike some other animals.

Haha....I read a posting once at the zoo and it says that Pandas spent around 40% of their time resting, 55% eating and the rest doing other stuff. I don't know if you would call this lazy but that's one heck of a life, don't you think?!!!!

They have to spend so much time eating bamboo, which isn't very nutrient rich, that they don't do much else. Similar to other leaf and grass eating mammals. Cows lie up a long time chewing their cuds. Grass-eating monkeys spend most of the daylight hours eating.

They aren't lazy, they're just chill, they know that they shouldn't wase more energy than they have to. They are picky eaters though.
