I live in a small town of about 100,000 people, and I was wondering why the interstate divides the city in half. On one side, there is shopping and houses and hotels and stuff, and on the other side, there is like a farm with cows and junk.

It is like 8 lanes wide and it is really ugly and distracting. Are most places like this or is my town just retarded?

You've never heard the cliche phrase, "the other side of the tracks"? Your town is NOT unique; the interstate is the modern equivalent of the railroad lines.

In Salt Lake City, it's not quite as obvious. As in many places, the higher up you live the richer you probably are, and as you go west and south down into the valley, people are poorer. But if you go far enough west and/or south, the socio-economics start rising again.

Personally I'd live where I cows do; but that's just me. I prefer a much smaller and much quieter way of life. You on the other hand seem to favour a faster genre.
My Dear One, no one yet has been able to fathom the Way of the DOT (Department of Transportation). They are Large and they are Mysterious and their Budget is Deep. They can do things that others would have been called onto the carpet and fined loooong before now. Undoubtably they have *some* reason to do what they do, but mere Mortals will never know until the Orange Cones of Confusion are in Place.
Trust me. it may sound Whacky but most DOTs are the same way.

I live in a small town of 6000 people. We have a new connect to the interstate. It seems that people in larger towns want to produce available. It has spurred some farms to sell out and grow houses. I don't kow what exactly to say about it. People need places to live. Sometimes I wonder how many people do we need alive but who am I to choose who lives and who doesn't? I think, honestly, that we need to get over the cute little house with the white picket fence and postage stamp lawn idea. We need a new way to accomodate all of us. Wildlife included.

It depends on where you live. That could be fairly common in your region... maybe not, I don't know. There's nothing really diving my town where it's like 8 lanes and I can't cross.
In time the other side will be developed...

So you're saying you want the stinky cows and manure right next to your house?

It's a grand design.
