When I ask this question to my Indian colleagues, they say that there is no more casts today since India became a democracy. I guess that reality is slightly more subtle...

Indians in general are quite ignorant, especially when there are so many of them. Caste system has always been a way of life for Indians and the government is struggling to even control it's people. It still exists but not as organised as ancient times. It is a way of making yourself feel more important in India. When so many people live there, of course yo would want to stand out and being more special than everyone. Even Indian Catholics treat lower classens badly.

Cast sysrem was first ever an organised attemp to introduce the concept of DIVISION OF LABOUR. The importance of which was realised by western enterpreneurs only in late nineteenth century.
The problem with cast system was that it got attached with birth. This was biggest mistake by policy planners of the day. But in independent Indian this system has no state sanction. The system is loosing ground very fast. This is the reality of cast system in India today.

Its in the same situation as rasism in America. People say there isnt any more rasism in America since the civil rights movement. But infact there is a lot of rasism in America, but it is slowly decresing as the newer generations come to existance. It works the same way in India with caste system. Ofcouse, ur parents, friends and family and ur own experience infulence ur decision on the caste system. Indian govt. is trying to bring up the lower casts by giving extra opputnities in education, work, etc. All of this depends on each individual. This kind of thing stops when people will stop being pessimistic, and arrogant and give people a chance.

India has
Unity in several!!
We have many castes , religions, costoms, cultures, language, But still we are United, That's why your colleague said that There is no more casts today! Because he doesn't discriminate any caste, religion, provision. And it's quite tangible easily!! We are UNITED.

Perhaps, one possible answer is that we have three important castes these days: HIG, MIG and LIG! (and, maybe a fourth one, NIG -- 'no income group'!) This modern age is the age of money and consumerism, the rung in society is very much decided by your income!
