How would you describe the time period in America during 1820-1860 especially in regards to slaves? I have not found any important events or people in this time period that in any way relate to slaves. Though I know there is information out there about this time period and slaves. It's just not in my book.

Kansas Nebraska Act (mid 1850s)
Dred Scott decision ~ 1857 (This is a Key one for you)

William Lloyd Garrison
Wendell Phillips
Elijah Lovejoy
Henry Ward Beecher
Horace Greeley
John Brown was already mentioned. All the above are anti slavery.

Explore the actions of Nat Turner, who led a slave revolt in Virginia in the 30s. William Styron wrote Autobiography of Nat Turner.
Harriet Tubman and her activities in the Underground Railroad would be very interesting.
Investigate the activities of the American Colonization Society.
Read Sandburg's chapter on Lincoln's views on freeing the slaves by compensating their former masters.

See if you can get a copy of Africans in America on DVD or VHS from your library. It was very well done.
