To do things to other people that will come back to bite you later

If you are speaking of a religious act of torturing yourself, these people do it to punish themselves and remind themselves they have done something bad.

If you mean mentally, then anything you obsess over constantly, and unable to change the situation, you are actually torturing yourself. I have done that to myself over something I should have done but did not do. We all need let go of things that we cannot control.

The IS has it down pretty accurately as does Kayboff.

The feeling of guilt can be torture.
Expecting to set perfect goals in a non perfect world can be torture to some.
Expecting another person to live up to your expectations could be self torture.

MMmmmm....you are a very deep thinker, you are ...young person.I would have to interpret it this way: Often it is something that comes back to haunt us, and we feel so terrible about it we condemn ourselves. We can become..depressed, self obsessed, withdrawn, loose our self esteem, and even physically abuse ourselves. The worse kind of torture is mentally, were the scars never heal and no -one can see them but ourselves.Torture is not necessarily something someone does to someone else in punishment or racial hatred but we can do it to ourselves, in guilt and anger and it is self destructive and can be damgaing to our health.
