A long time ago, a close friend asked me to promise that I'd tell her if I was ever thinking about hurting myself. We got in a fight last week and I spent the weekend wanting to kill myself. I haven't said anything to her, and don't know if I should because she's going to feel like its her fault.
From my current point of view, there's nothing to be gained by telling her, and she's going to feel horrible about it if she knows. On the other hand, if I don't tell her and she finds out later, she'll both feel guilty about it and be hurt that I didn't tell her.

i wouldnt tell her unless you think talking to her will make you feel better. you do not want to put that burden on your friend. I know this sounds lame but try talking to a guidence counslor. I have been in a few bad situations and talking to a guidence counslor always helps because they generally take your side .

Why did the close friend ask for such a promise in the first place? This is a danger sign, that you may wish to harm yourself.

Why did you have suicidal thoughts, after a fight with a friend? This is a danger sign, that you may wish to harm yourself.

Whether you tell your friend is an unimportant detail, compared to the fact that YOU NEED MEDICAL HELP. NOW!!!. BEFORE THE WORST BEFALLS YOU.

You are more worried about the fact that your friend might be upset than the fact that you might be injured or dead. This is a very serious question. I don't care if you tell your friend or not. Tell a parent, doctor, or trusted adult instead.

I agree with poppet. You maybe shouldn't tell her but you should defiantly tell someone. If shes a true friend she will understand and be happy that you sought help!

You should always tell if you have thoughts of self harm. You don't have to tell her...but you should tell someone.
