I have to write an essay for english about authority figures. I chose to write mine on police abusing their authority. does anyone know any good links or stories online of examples of police abusing their authorities? i cant find anything. Also, read my introduction paragraph and tell me if there is anything to fix and ways to make it better. That would be greatly appreciated!

Police are important authority figures in our society; they set examples to other citizens so it makes it even more important for them to follow the laws rather than abusing their authority. They are given the responsibility among many people, when they think they are above the law and go out and rob a bank its not setting a very good example for the rest of society. Many police officers are hypocritical since they were put in such an important authority state they need to live upon what they are telling others to do and not break the laws themselves.

check out articles about police using their tazers in the wrong situations, or for getting people to answer the door so they can rape them.
Check out newspaper websites like AJC, NYT, etc. for this sort of info.

Well, about your paragraph - it's kind of bold for you to assert that "many police officers are hypocritical..."

While there are certainly SOME, stating MANY, makes it sound like more do than do not. And it is certainly true that there are MANY good, honest police out there.

Also, the statement that a police officer is abusing authority when he robs a bank is not quite what abusing authority is about. That's breaking a law. Abusing authority is making/forcing or having people do things for you merely because you're a police officer. Telling someone that they can get out of a ticket by sexual favors - that's abusing authority.

Provide an argument or premise to your essay. Such as, "Police enforce our code of laws, yet we know from the popular press they are abusive to both guilty & innocent citizens." Then provide supporting data. Be sure to provide balance, that is, both sides of your argument. Also add statistics, such as the number of abusive acts vs. the number of police contacts in the community. Then indicate your opinion as to why police are abusive based on your arguments. Use your local newspaper to locate such information. A larger sampling is better, and would be a more valid sampling.

Your paragraph needs a lot of work. Sentences are too lengthy. How many police officers in your community rob banks? How many police officers violate the law in other ways? It is overly emotional. Are you going to discuss your run-in with the law in this essay?
