They can but they are more served as extra blockers in a two tight end set or to draw the opposing defenses off guard and catch the football. Thats how tight ends like Tony Gonzalez, Todd Heap, Antonio Gates, and Dallas Clark make their living. They are some of the best Tight Ends in the league. But normally you don't see them running the ball to often, unless its some sort of trick play.

A TE does not normally run the ball as stated in previous answers, However some offenses utilize an H-back which is a hybrid position...kind of like a TE/Fullback combo. These guys may are not the prototypical TE or FB they do a lot of both and often times line-up in the backfield

As far as rushing the ball (as in taking a handoff from the QB), a TE will not do that. The TE primarily blocks during running plays, basically serving as an extra offensive lineman.
The TE also can be a pass receiver, usually running short to medium-length routes.

i dont see how he could run the ball. maybe on a reverse. are we talking high school football here? I would consider a TE a Wingback, and wingbacks run the ball sometimes. TE's are usually on the LOS or a yard off, so its hard to carry the ball from there.

No but will after he catches a pass. I have seen a few plays when the te will run a reverse but that has been years.

Usually, no. But on reverse plays and plays where a TE might be lined up in the backfield as an H-back, it's possible.
