Saudi Arabia is the most strict government in the world. And they are definately a theocracy. Iran is pretty strict as well, but no where in the same league as Saudi Arabia.
Just to add some actual facts and not just random examples: Let's look at FreedomHouse scores. They rank the democratic values of every country in the world. A 1 to 7 scale with a 7 being very not free. The first score is the political rights and the second is the civil liberties. These are some Islamic countries:
Iran 6, 6
Bahrain 5, 5
Algeria 6, 5
Occupied Territories (Israel run) 4, 6
Occupied Territories (Palestinian run) 4, 6
Oman 6, 5
Saudi Arabia 7, 6
United Arab Emirage 6, 5
Jordan 5, 4
Libya 7, 7
Syria 7, 6
Western Sahara 7, 6
Egypt 6, 5
Kuwait 4, 4
Moracco 5, 4
Qatar 6, 5
Tunisia 6, 5
Yemen 5, 5
Sudan 7, 7
Afghanistan 5, 5
Somalia 7, 7
Indonesia 2, 3
Pakistan 6, 5
Thus, it seems like Iran is middle of the pack in terms of political freedom and a little bit worse on civil liberties. However, notice that there are some much worse Islamic countries (and some worse Islamic governments) than Iran: namely Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Syria, Western Sahara. So, your teacher is wrong, in my opinion with freedomhouse backing me up. That doesn't mean Iran is setting any high marks, but they're not that bad.

Of course when Ayaatolla Khomeini took over he set to convert Iran into a strict Islamic state. He has introduced many practices which hailed back to ancient Islam. But that is only the outward look. Do you know that Iran has a prosperous Jewish minority which refused to go to Israel. There is one Member of MajlisIranian Paliament) elected by the IranianJ Jews.In fact, you would be surpeised to know that Embassies of Iran in Eurupe at the time o tHitler lest loose his stromtroppers against the Jews helped many a jews to escape toIran forging documents for their safe passage. Even if Iran may rant against Israel ut that is all rhetoric. It is more actuated by the desire to do jusrice to the Palestians whose country was robbe by the Israelites underthe specious excuse of it being their promised land. You will also wonder to know that despite all the dust raised in the western press by the tyrrrany of the taliban in Iran a deputation of women from USA whihc went their for an on the spot study in afghanistan(Before aAmerican invation) they found that the women were quite liberated. In fact, while the elder women did observe v eil they said it was because they were used to it all these days. But young women went quite freely without weil or even headgear and nobody bothered them about it. The report has then be circulated through the Web.
I am not an Iranian or not even a Muslim. I am from India . You ight have heard all the allelged te rrosist activities of the Indian Muslkms who are disciplies of Osaaa Bin Laden. However, you will b surprised to note that the common Hindu and the Common muslims go quite well together. That has been our usual experience for ages.

That's not exactly an opinion, it's a fact. Iran does have one of the most strict, if not the most strict Islamic governments. Women can't drive or do most things men can do, they have to cover themselves up. You can be killed if someone suspects you are gay or if you disagree with the government. It's crazy.

Maybe you should intereview a homosexual from Iran and see if your teacher was right. I'm curious which government in the Islamic part of the world you thought was "more strict" then Iran.

Your teacher did say one of the most strict and I'd have to agree. It has certainly become much more strict since they became a theocracy.

It does. Their strict application of Sharia law is only matched by the Wahabis in Saudi Arabia.

I agree with you. By saying that such and such a country has a strict government, we are almost implying that that country is kind of cruel in its methods. The truth is it's practically the same everywhere, depending on how skewed our images of "strict" are.
