What about when writing an expository essay?

MLA is widely used but it's not the only kind. You can also use APA or Chicago, but you should check with your teacher/professor because from my experience some of them have their own preferences.

expository essays would be written in MLA style. APA style is used when the topic has something to do with the Field of medicine.

you dont always use mla for research papers you can use apa and chicago style too... depends on the discipline.. and you can use mla also for abstracts
