You can use anything that is colorful or plays music. Infants are attracted to bright and colorful objects...best bet get a musical globe or one of the moving picture toys for the playpen or crib. Stimulation galore! Like one w/ bright fish swimming....

I would play the classical music and give the infant a massage. In addition, you always want to talk to your infant a lot. Just go about your day explaining what you are doing. The baby will like the sound of your voice. You could also play the TV in the background. Other things you could do is to dance with your baby (hold the baby and dance), carry the baby longer during the day, shake different toys in front of the baby while he/she is awake, etc.

As for complex pictures, babies can't really register them. They like things in black and white and eventually can see color.

I use a mobile that plays classical music , its also very colorful and has leaves that open and close w/ a bird in the middle to play peek a boo with my son ,along w/ a night light attached so you choose to turn it on or off .. He loves it :)
Back massages are nice to .. especially before bedtime w/ some lavander and chamomile lotion ..
Also depending on the age of your baby , smaller infants tend to go for more difficult type patterns .. they bother my eyes but my Dr said its more enjoyable for infants

I would do all of the above except turn the lights on and off. That might be a little too disorienting? Even regular pictures like animals and people are good stimulation. Singing and touching your baby at the same time would work, too.
