I have this online newspaper thingy at my school, and I wanted to make comics. I made up one called "Mr. Badpun". The puns are SUPPOSED to be bad. So I turned in one, which was "Do you like my new vaccuum cleaner? IT SUCKS!". Yeah, and then they wouldn't take it because they apparently liked it, but thought it was inappropriate. So I made ANOTHER one, and it was some dude running into the hospital saying "Doc! I think I'm shrinking!" and Mr. Badpun was all "Don't worry, you'll just have to be a little patient." See, the ninth graders are the ones choosing, and they didn't think it was funny. I dunno, a lot of people told me it was so stupid that it's funny, and that's how it should be, but I'm trying to decide whether to make another. Mr. Badpun's cute too ^.^ He all chibified and has kitty features, but I dont know whether they just didn't like the pun, or whether it was the idea. What do you guys think? The next one would be "Time flies like an arrow, Fruit flies like a banana!" Heh.

"Pun" is short for "punishment", or so comedians say. Puns are supposed to make you groan, so if you get people moaning then it's a good pun.

I used to put puns into some cartoons I drew for a living. One was along the lines of the shrinking guy you told. This girl is asking another girl if her pony has a sore throat because she heard her say he was a little hoarse (horse). Ponies are little horses. Get it?

I also did "upchuck" jokes like "If your good friend Chuck slipped and fell on a patch of ice, would you help up Chuck?" and "If your good friend Chuck couldn't see over the crowd at a concert, would you hold up Chuck?".

I think if you're going to write a comic, it should be funny. I understand your concept, but you want people to laugh when they read it. If the puns are purposely bad, there's not a great chance that you'll get a good following. You have a good idea, you just need to tweak it a little. Keep working, and I'm sure you'll be a legacy online in no time!

I love the shrinking patient one. I think maybe they just don't get it. Do the people choosing understand that a pun is not necessary laugh out loud funny?

Maybe you should PUNt them to the curb and ask someone else! Ok, that was bad,

Cute, but corny as all get out (of course, puns are)!

It will really depend on the appeal of your artwork. Chibi style tends to be something that polarizes people (they either love or hate it!). Perhaps try asking around your school and getting opinions of those who would actually read it.

Good luck!

Well ya know, the do-gooders and PC snobs have to protect society from the Who-Who and poopy sayers. Eventually it will be against the law to tell any joke at all, "people might be offended if you make them laugh while they're whining". Yes they are amusing and anyone who thinks they are wrong is a stuck up snot and needs a dope slap.

Seems to me these 9th graders are expecting too much. It's a school paper...I think they are appropriate. Keep up the good work.
