Because the patters of behavior are controlled by us. We choose to act how we act, not to ignore best intentions just because we feel its btter for the situations or because we feel more comfortable with this decision. It can be a losing battle but it is controlled by you. You can lose if you don't reflect and analyze your choices and outcomes. Talking to someone can help(a close friend) about why your decisions don't come out the way you want.

Patterns of behavior are sort of habits and once you get a habit, it is hard to lose it as it becomes familiar. We tend to feel comfortable in things that are familiar to us. You can be a winner or a loser by choice, depends on how much control you have over your habits.

Your behavior is a result of your thoughts and feelings. Your behavior is a result of past experiences. Your behavior now is comfortable. To change is extremely difficult. It often means making new friends, leaving old ones behind. It means, leaving the known "comfort" and taking risk. Extremely difficult and it is rare to see a person change.
