my boyfriend and i went to the store to pick up a couple of things, we got in line behind a man with a hand full of movies. he handed the cashier a check, because of the type of check it was she was explaining to the man, she had to call a manager over for a code. My boyfriend who was a manager for the company explained to me that the only type of check that needs a security code is a welfare check. Why are people spending their welfare checks on items that are not essential for living, like movies, gameboys, etc.. and roll away in cadillacs? I have noticed when i used to work in a grocery store, people have used thier access cards to buy big sheet cakes for a birthday they were having, soo theyre using money they get from the government on big sheet cakes instead of bread and milk. If they are spending thier money on things like that shouldnt they be working? My tax money is supposed to go towards people who need it not take advantage of it. :-<

if they are using their money to make thier loved one feel better on a special or "last day" they should save thier OWN money to make it even more special, not make everyone else pay for it, i would love to use government money to give a love one the birthday present they always wanted.

I'm as liberal as all get out in that I feel people who are down on their luck should have help when they need it, no question.
But we live in a world where people like the one you described coexist with the poor elderly lady who has to choose between her groceries and medicine. It's sickening. The money should go to people who really need it.
My sister is a checkout girl at a grocery store and she tells me all about how people come in there, pay for everything in food stamps, and when she tells them that f. stamps don't cover the 4 packs of cigarettes, they yank out a huge roll of cash from their jeans.

That's right. Welfare can be spent any way a person likes. I've also seen someone spend $200+ on every trip to the grocery store when they had food stamps for 2 adults and a baby (all name brands and the best cuts of meat). The government is doing a terrible job managing social programs, and they want more and more money to fund them. Personally, I want my tax money back to spend how I see fit, and help people I feel are deserving, not people who know how to work the system. I don't eat the best cuts of meat or name brands.

Bottom line, this is the problem that changed the south from being predominately democratic to republican. Welfare has always been abused in the south and liberals have not seen the problems that welfare abuse creates. Answer, Give a man $1 and next time he will want $2. Moral is, if a man can work and won't, let him starve, then he will work.

That is the problem with Government welfare programs. Recipients can waste the money just as easily as they can use it wisely.
You say your tax money supposed to go towards people who need it. PLEASE show me where in the Constitution the government is authorized to take MY money and GIVE it to ANYONE for ANY reason. I have looked MANY times and can't find it. Neither could James Madison, our 4th President and the "Father of the Constitution".
"I cannot undertake to lay my finger
on that article of the Constitution
which granted a right to Congress of expending,
on the objects of benevolence,
the money of their constituents."
James Madison.

Do you mean SSI checks- those are for poor, disabled people: they can spend them however- it's only $600 a month for God's sakes or welfare is WAy less! I know a lady who was in a bad car accident & looks fine but now she has seizures and a lot of other health problems that you can't see- should she not be able to buy a sheet cake for her young child's birthday?

How do you know about that mans personal situation. Maybe his son , daughter or wife is ill or on death's bed, and he is doing this to make their last day's good, with a borrowed car. Don't be too quick to judge others actions, you don't know their circumstance.
Qualifying and maintaining enrolment is no easy feat, and if you have ever been on it, you'd know.
When was the last time that you went out of your way to help someone on welfare? Or volunteer to help in your community on a regular basis?
Being on welfare or disability income is no fun at the best of times, where these people are still suffering, underfed and malnourished, and in need of better health care, and FRIENDS. TRUE FRIENDS!
Forget about how YOU personally are paying, because YOU aren't. Maybe you should write one of these people one of your PERSONAL checks, and see how good it feels to know that you PERSONALLY have made a positive difference in their life...and how truly thankful they are that finally someone turned up that actually cared.
Be nice. It could be you.

The problem here is that there are too many people who are eligible for welfare that shouldn't be. Either they're hiding their incomes or the government is too generous.
