Not all girls play with them. My daughters never had any interest in them at all. One reason Barbie became such a big hit when it was introduced in 1959 was that many girls wanted an adult fashion doll that they could play with. At that time their only doll choices were baby dolls, rag dolls, or paper dolls.

Dolls are heavily marketed towards girls from the time they are born. All of the commercials for dolls have girls who are happily playing with their dolls, while all of the commercials for trucks have boys in them. I recommend getting your friend's sister some blocks :)
