Who do you think was more important for his own country? Peter the Great for Russia... or Louis XIV for France?

I'd go with Peter, and it's really not that close. Louis didn't really alter the course of French history, while Peter completely changed Russia's course and made Russia into a great power.

both are important figures in history. Peter the Great reformed Russia from the corrupt and terrible czar system and brought Mother Russia to great power in his time. As well with Louis XIV or the sun king, he brought great wealth, power and jobs to people who lived in france during that time period. As well with winning many major battles against European powers. So it is a tie between the two but I would go with probably peter the great if I had to pick one

Louis XIV is the most notable, but I think Peter changed Russia way more than Louis changed France.

I would say that Peter the Great was more important because he opened up Russia to Western European culture, thus, taking them out of the Middle Ages into the Enlightenment period kicking and screaming....literally (stanch traditionalists balked at modernization).

Peter is classified in a group called "enlightened despots." While he considered himself "enlightened," he also had absolute power.
