I recently received my AA degree and transferred to a university. I am 21 and I'm finally on my own. I decided not to work this semester to allow myself to become adjusted. I don't party during the week, only once on the weekend. I totally failed my first two tests in my two business courses. The drop date already passed and I have no idea what to do!? I've never done this bad before, and I don't want to fail the entire semester my GPA will be off to a really bad start. Is there any special tricks, or advice anyone can give me so that I can do better? These exams are so much harder then community college and I feel completely lost and discouraged! Please help!??!?
Thank you

Dee..

The first thing you need to NOT do is feel discouraged! I also received my AA and am currently in my Senior year to receive my Business degree. The road was not easy and I will tell you the truth; my junior and senior year have been the best for me.
If you failed your first two tests, either you don't really understand the material or you didn't study..right? It sounds like you are the type to study so maybe you just don't understand what's going on.
First piece of advice-- talk to your professor. The majority of them really want you to succeed and will help you in any way possible. Ask questions during class or meet up with them in office hours. Many students fail exams and still earn exceptional grades in their course. Don't even think of dropping right now-- you can still turn it around but I highly recommend talking with your professor or a tutor. May I ask which classes they are?

Also, maintaining a high GPA is always great but don't get too stuck on it. Just know most employers don't really hire based on GPA. They like people that multi-task (school and work or involved in clubs, activities at the same time), etc. As long as it stays around 3.0 you should be fine.

But honestly, I started at University with way less than a 3.0 and I have raised it to well over a 3.0 within the last 2 years. These are just two classes, don't let it ruin your college career!

Let me know if I can assist in any other way-- I might be able to help in courses!

the best advice that I can give, and do give to other students is to go to a health food store near you and get some DMAE. This is basically the reason they say eating fish makes you smarter and is one of the main ingredients in the focus factor you may hear so much about. It is natural so no side affects to worry about but you will find that it will increase your concentration as well as your memory. You put in in juice or water and don't really taste it, no feeling of being any different than before, but you will notice your concentration greatly improved and your memory as well. It does come in pill form but I have always used the liquid and like that better.
One high school girl I told about that took it before a test and the next time I saw her she told me she was going to take it the rest of her life it had helped her so much.
I think if you try that you will see a lot of difference in your grades and your ability to study and remember what you learn. Good Luck to you!!

You need to talk to an ad visor and also your professors. If the professors see that you really care about your grades and that you are trying to make an effort then they may be willing to help. Also, go to them during office hours so that you can understand things that you didn't get in class.
Try to form study groups with other people in the class. They may be able to explain things to you better than the professor can. They can also help anticipate what will be on the exams.

Yes. limit your partying to one night, once per month. When you set a schedule and stick to it you know in your mind when you can forget stuff and party. No more worrying about what you were supposed to remember the next day. I learned to do this many years ago and it worked great. Until my senior year. After Mom died I threw it all away, if I could live it over I would have stayed with it. And you should.
