It depends on the price and if you know what yoru doing. It you know exactly what your doing and know the incompatibilities fir certain things etc. Then you can afford to just go from scratch . But if no i seriously suggest having someone help you with it . Because you cant just stick a processor and a motherboards together and expect them to work. But let me answer your question yes a barebone kit is good because some of them are basically steals the price is so good that its phenomenal . Like i saw a barebone kit going for 300 on tiger direct .com Gran t it came with an 300gb hardrive which normally cost at least 100 so that is 1 third of the cost of the kit itself . BUt any way it also came with 2 gigs of ram an Intel core duo processor running at 3.0ghz. That is what i am talking about that is a steal . But the thing iwth a barebone kit there are certain limitations as to what can hold into your box so to speak . So if you want complete customization and know what your- doing built it from scratch don't be lazy because in the end it will pay off.

Generally building your own computer whether through someone's site or even on your own you will not likely end up on the cheaper side. There's no way you're going to get parts cheaper than HP, Asus, Emachines, Gateway, or even dell. When building on a manufacturers site you will end up paying the markup they have on there anyway. The main reason people choose to build their own PC's is because they don't like the options or bundles that are offered in manufactured PCs, or they want to ensure the quality of each part is the brand and quality they want. E.G. most companies will use lower quality mother boards and power supplies, I built my computer to ensure I knew exactly the quality of each part in there. Usually building a custom PC is done by gamers or professionals who need better than what is currently average on the market. Usually which ever manufacturer's website you go to most will give you an option for custom computers. Dell is big on it but I don't recommend them. In my experience it will not serve you well. Others might disagree.

a barebone system is

Case
Motherboard
CPU (of your choice)
memory.
built and tested in some cases..

to answer you question. is this the way to go. "YES" if you know what your doing.

next big and most important tip if your going to go in that direction is...

get your parts from a small local computer shop... not a supper store that way you can always take it back if you have problems..

buying on the net can and dose have more draw backs if there or problems...like each part has to be returned to the manufactures and not returned to the suppliers.. not a good situation to be in speaking from expperience,,, it takes months to get parts back,,,,
