I know that was Dr. Cosby said was controversial but after watching the clips shown on Oprah and viewing the show I really don't understand why. He was just pointing out an unfortunate truth within the black community. Now this is my opinion but I would like to hear what other people feel (if they feel anything at all) about this subject.

I watched the Bill Cosby/Oprah episode and felt that Bill Cosby was speaking the truth. It's a shame that 70% of African American are born to single mothers. I am not judging people, but, someone (besides these mothers) has to be held accountable for the rearing and the livelihood of these children. And, Cosby was absolutely correct in saying that many young black men are misled with the belief that they don't have to bear responsibility unless they marry the mother of the child. Then, a vicious cycle of absent fathers, poverty stricken mothers and children involved with crime continue in the innner-cities. It's sad, but, very true!

yes I agree with Bill but this is for all races not just the black but sometimes I think he talks racist it's a shame that people wont listen to white people when they speak on things like this that is the problem and if the 5,000 per child passes you will find that the number of single parents will triple or more these single mothers and fathers need to become sterile so they don't have anymore some of these kids have 5 or more before they are 20 yrs old and the boys yes boys because they don't take resposability have around 20 or more kids by differet mothers

Yes! Unfortunately he and Dr. Alvin were telling the truth about the scourge and huge problems in the Black community. The statistics are startling-there are way too many single parent homes, absentee fathers, guns out there, drugs and poverty and overall ignorance and so called "parents" who don't seem to take an active interest in their children's education. It's a shame that the show wasn't 2 hours long since there are serious issues that need more attention. It was very eye opening and on the point!

Because he is black it is "safer" for him to say these things out loud. The statistics are mind blowing. 12% of the population is Black but 50% of the prison population is black! What a wake up call! I give him nothing but credit for trying to help his race. I am a member of a minority and believe me if a white person was to make factual statements about illegal aliens, or immigration or Latinos, we would probably react with a "what does that person" really know about the Hispanic culture etc...... But if George Lopez for example made the same remarks we would probably listen because after all he is "one of us"

I hope everyone listens to Bill Cosby he is a great man who cares about people

I missed that show today because I was searching for a new apartment but I definitely wanted to see this whole show. I'm on Oprah.com now trying to see the episode and read over the summary. Anyway, I did see him on 'Meet the Press' this previous Sunday and I think he's right, it's time black men did step up to the plate, stay with their women especially for their kids, but it seems like black people's problem today is that we're giving up too easily; thinking that all is too crumbled to fix. It's time we work harder at everything we do and never give in until we win for our ancestors, ourselves, our children, and our children's children! - Come On, People!

That goes for anyone black, white or whatever color. So I don't see what was so controversial about it at all. It was a good show but what he said could be applied across the board in my opinion.

The statistics they showed at the beginning of the show were stunning.
50% of prison population is black, blacks only make up 12% of the over all population.
28% of all black males will end up in jail.
70% of all black babies are born to single parents.

We are going to have to tell our selves the truth
Not only with this, but other troubling issues.
