Alright, so if a couple is still legally married but they are currently separated, is it legal for one person to read their spouse's mail and keep it from them - including personal letters to important documents - ?

No, its not legal, its mail tampering. And that's a Federal offense.
Even with my husband and I being together, I only open those items addressed to him that are bills, and that's only because I have his permission to do so.
If you can prove this, and that the mail was exclusively addressed to you, then the police can step in here.

No body should open anyone else's mail. That an offense. Mail is private and addressed to one person only. If you are seperated how is your spouse getting hold of your mail in the first place? They have NO right to open it let alone keep important mail. I would report them. That's ridiculous!! Why are you allowing it?
