Well, that's a hard question to answer, since there really is no standard body of knowledge on ghosts. Heck, according to our current scientific knowledge, they aren't even known to exist. So the methods you might use to find ghosts are going to be different depending on who you ask.
My ideas, as a skeptic, are merely these:
First: keep an eye out, keep several cameras handy around the house, and keep a journal. Don't rely on "feeling" ghosts. That's way too subjective. You can easily freak yourself out and think you're feeling something. Also, a small digital voice recorder would be good to have if you think you're hearing things.
Secondly: any time you think you observed or heard something, GO INVESTIGATING! Don't just chalk it up to ghosts. Find out what's going on. My bet is that 90% of the time, and maybe even 100% of the time, you can find a natural cause for whatever you experienced after a little sleuthing.

Children under the age of 8 are normally very sensitive to their surroundings and the environment. If you have a child of that age group, let the child play around the house for some time. Leave the child alone. Observe if the child suggest that your company is needed. Secondly, ask the child if they would like to stay and play in the house.
Children's responses are pure and if they say that they do not like the place, ask them where about they do not like, ask them to bring you to the location where they dislike, and in that location, ask the child to point to the exact place he dislike.
If the child refuse to enter the place they dislike, do not force them. Their innocence may be your answer.
Try to check the magnetic fields in the house. Check a few location, especially at the location where the ghost likes to wonder. Prior to checking, switch off all electrical items that produces magnetic interference.
From my experience, areas where magnetic fields are not consistent or are clashing may signify the need for further investigation. Always remember to rule out electrical magnetic interference first.
I have not seen any but have felt their presence. I normally ignore such feeling and continue whatever I do. I noticed that if i ignore their presence, there will not be any more feeling that i am watched.

We would love to hear more detail of what it is exactly that goes on in your house?
Be careful. You sometimes get what you ask for. LOL. In my house where I grew up, there were footsteps, there were knocking on doors, there were cold spots, missing and reappearing objects (sometimes years apart)... objects would show back up in the same spot that they went missing. These objects have included dolls, a type writer (right in from tof our eyes), and books, papers, et al. Record Albums went flying across the room. From aleaning position against the wall they were thrown to the other side.
It is amazing that my parents adamantly did not believe in ghosts and they put up with the same stuff I did, You could hear people running around upstairs when no one was up stairs. I have heard voices. I once saw some ectoplasmic something in my room. My room was the most haunted in the while house. It is a long story, but people who were not aware of the history reacted to the phenomenon of the room. Also my father remarried a year before he died and his new wife swore that my mother was roaming around the halls after her. The footstpes and presence she felt was not my mother but the same ghoullie ghosties that were there since I was a baby and since my mother was alive. LoL. Now Quid Pro Quo.

A stray sign (working example: from a buddies automobile keys) could have executed it. If that's the only reason you think of there's a ghost on your place, then i might say, no.

If a ghost is in your house you shouldn't have to look for them. They should be quite apparent.
This is the problem I have with so many of the ghost hunters out there. If you want to see a ghost bad enough *any* noise will be the ghost you're looking for.

make sure your place is quiet. get a DVR and ask some questions. get a good digital camera and takes some pics. Orbs dont count. And if you have one set a video recorder out and leave it on in the room thats most active and walk away for a while. see what you come up with.

If you're scared, I wouldn't suggest that you start investigating on your own.
Find a reputable paranormal team in your area and give them a call. Try to avoid ones that bring psychics or mediums or consider photo & video orbs to be anomalous among other things. I can help you find one if you'd like.
If you are not afraid and really would like to do the research yourself, feel free to contact me and I will walk you through it.
My email is in my profile thingie.

The ghost doesn't live in your house but it lives in your mind. If you are careful you can drive it away from there.
