I pick up strays all the time..
Just remember, when you pick up a stray, report that you have found it to the local animal control along with a photo and description so that if the owner comes looking for it they can be reunited. I don't like surrendering a stray to a shelter as I figure that it crossed my path, thus, it's my responsibility, but, I do want it to find it's owner if they are looking for it. Also, call around and find a vet's office or animal shelter that does microchip scanning. Many more pets now are microchipped and even if their collar has gone missing, they may have other forms of ID.
You should never assume that an animal has been poorly cared for and shouldn't be returned. You have no way of knowing how long the animal has been missing. If you do find an animal in rough shape, you will want to document that with photos and perhaps a vet statement. That way, if the owner says it's only been missing a day, you know that it's a case for an animal cruelty investigation. If it's been missing a month, who knows where it's been, there could be a good reason it was in rough shape that had nothing to do with the owner.
I personally don't run a found ad.. I'll stick a found flier at the shelter nearest by and report it and I'll scan for a microchip. If the owner doesn't even call to report it missing or go to look for it they probably shouldn't have the animal back.

first of all there is a legal issue there. Depends on which country you live in obviously but here in Australia it is actually forbidden to keep a stray as such. You are supposed to go to the vet and check if the dog has a microchip first. If he/she doesn't then you can register the pet under your name. However if there is a microchip, the dog will need to go the pound and his owners contacted. If the dog is not claimed then you can adopt the dog but most councils will charge for that. So really you could check that first. As far as the emotional side of things is concerned, strays can be as good if not better than other dogs but it would be wise to have the good character and behaviour checked to make sure that whatever bad experience he/she had has not made it unsuitable to live in a family environment. Good luck

I never have because all the pets I've found had owners, but if I found a stray I would definitely take it in. I have 2 dogs (pit bull/terrier and a chihuahua) and 3 cats, but I would take any stray in as long as I could pay for the vet bills and food!

Yes. We have three cats.
Our latest one was a stray that found us. He's the most loving cat I've ever had.
One came from a shelter, and the other one came from the country.
We believe in taking care of animals.

yea my grandpa has a stray dog, nothing is wrong with them. straydogs or cats r sometimes abused so they may be scared or a little violent at first. they end up being extremely loyal and sweet pets. i would take one in, but make sure u give them all the shots before u let them lick u just in case. it was cute b/c my grandpa was lonely so my grandma found a stary puppy and put in a box for like 10 min while she was in the car. she told my grandpa that there were groceries in the box in her trunk...when he opend it he was surprised with a very happy puppy jumping all over hima nd licking him. she is probably noe fo the most loyal dogs i have ever seen. definitely get one =]

Two of our five were outdoor strays from this area. One of the others was from a pet store, and the other two were from the humane society.

My current cat is a stray/dropoff. She was living outside,
and the weather was getting cold, so I took her in. She likes
being outside during the day, but loves a warm place to sleep at night.

Yes. He was free in my area, so I took him in. I posted signs around the area to see if he belonged to anyone, no one responded. I took him to the vet, got him examined, booster shots etc. He's been good ever since, he needed some training and such, but it worked out well. I would not reccommend this to someone who isnt an experienced owner. They say to take them to the shelter, but since I wanted him anyway, why let the shelter take him and pay a fee to get him back.
