this question for one of my roommates. How do you use Google Earth to see pictures of the Grand Canyon of Africa? I know it is larger than our own Grand Canyon, but I cannot for the life of me, figure out how to use Google Earth to see pictures of this place. Can and will you help me? Thanks. My roommates are from Honduras

Well I downloaded this program. I still don't understand how to navigate the site, but I have been playing around with it. I cannot find the Grand Canyon analog in Africa, I am not specific enough in my search. But I've seen this on Discovery. I just cannot remember the name of the place. Either the Great Rift Valley or Olduvai Gorge, but I cannot get close enough to see what they have shown on Discovery either.

Try googling the Rift Valley in Africa...this is a huge rift system where the Earth continues to move away from the center rift, causing the Earth to increase in circumferance. Other ocean bottom rifts are always active also...increasing the actual size of the Earth as time goes by. Perhaps that is what you are thinking???? Love and peace, goldwing

I'll be 70 in January and I didnt know there was a Grand Canyon in Africa. I wish I could help you, but first I'd have to find out where in Africa it is. Then I think I'd either Google the head of the government in that area, or just put the facts in the search bar. I'd be anxious to see those pictures myself.

If you already have Google Earth downloaded, go to the site and you'll see the earth. You'll see a hand, and press the left side of the mouse to rotate the earth to Africa. Move the hand to the top right corner and two long bars will show up. Put the hand on the bar that's about half way up the scale and drag that bar to the plus side and you'll see Africa getting more and more detail. Just keep moving to the plus side which is up until you get as close as you want. You can actually zoom in on houses.

when I use google earth, If I don't feel like looking for a specific location ,and if I know the name of it, I just type it in the appropriate spot at the top left I think and it finds it for you. You will notice when you zoom in closer that there are rectangles over certain places. Well I have found that these are the areas where you can zoom in really close.. If you haven't downloaded it yet, just print Google earth in the google opening and then look for the free version and then just download it . It is more fun than you could ever believe! You will also notice little dots here and there and if you click on them they have pics or specs of the area. Tell us when you get it ok?

Goldwing is absolutely right. It's called the Rift Valley.
It has been researched & found that the southern end of it was where humans first started their travels northward to Egypt & beyond.
Once you get the hang of Google earth you are going to have a grand time exploring.
Enjoy.

It looks like I'm too young to know the answer. I thought that our Grand Canyon was one of the seven wonders of the world. I know there is a mini Grand Canyon on Kauai. Been there, it's breath taking.

I don't have the wisdom of my 66 years saved up. I've been using it every day! I think I would "google" Africa first and then find maps of Africa, points of interest, and narrow it down one step at a time.
