Did he have an idea of how much damage there would be and did he have a big idea of the situation?

He was the commander-in-chief. The military decision rested on his shoulders.

He probably had a pretty good idea what the bomb would do.

I don't think he lost sleep over dropping the bombs on Japan. He felt pretty justified.

He did not know of the project until after he took office. An aide quietly informed him of what little information we secretly knew at the time. He was deeply overwhelmed by the depth of the situation, yes, but he decided that he needed to drop the bomb to help end the war and save American lives. He had no idea what it could actually do to Hiroshima. He never knew people would still suffer from cancer years later.

They would not surrender to us so we had to drop it and yes i think Truman had the qualifications

he was the president and it was his decision. He also knew about how many America soldiers would die in an Invasion of Japan.It was a Tough but correct call.
