You write of free market economics which require an open mind free of government control which at the time was feudalism to help the commoner. This is required in Classic Liberalism. GW Bush is not a Classic Liberal, Democrats like Thomas Jefferson practiced Classic Liberalism. Reagan promoted Classic Liberalism and called free markets and supply side economics. It works and it helps the commoner.

When did the two mix, in the era of Keynes, the twenties and thirties, Governments intervened to help the commoner directly. That intervention on behalf of the commoner was considered liberal but it destroyed free markets and ultimately free minds.

As to the above, Jefferson's Republicans changed their name long before Abe Lincoln took to the stage. Review your history. The Democrats claim Jefferson.

Liberal is the lie that Leftists call themselves to make themselves seem like they value the foundation of this country. Most of them don't even understand Classic Liberalism. The Liberal Party in England is Classic Liberalism and is the Conservative party, Labour is the Left-wing party and are actually less insidous than the Leftists in our Country.

People with intellect don't confuse the two.

Liberals left libertarianism in the dust when they discovered the wonderful virtues of socialism and what an all powerful government can do for them (if they're the ones in control). Look how they trip over themselves to defend dictators like Chavez and Ahmadinejad. They are role models running the type of system they would like to impose here.

Liberalism is a philosophy that incorporates the political, social and economic aspects of human behavior. All three are integral parts of the whole.
Realism/Mercantilism, Neo-Marxism and Constructivism are the other three philosophies incorporating the same three aspects.
If the media taught you all you know about Political Science, then you have it all wrong.

You are indeed correct. In the U.S., I'm guessing about the time of FDR. In England, Around the time of Albright, Disraeli and Paxton. Since then, in the U.S., liberalism has in recent years really alligned itself with socialism.
