limewire uses peer to peer sharing... and peer to peer is not illegal.....

what made it illegal are the persons using it for piracy..... not the software.....

Well Limewire isn't but downloading and / or sharing copyrighted works is,

NOW READ THIS PLEASE, when you installed Limewire did you let it search for files to share? if you did.....it will search your whole hard drive for music, video, pictures and documents in all different formats to share and index them for others to find and download.......Yes, ALL your personal stuff too.

So get to your Limewire on the title bar goto Tools / Options and in the left pane click on sharing, now on the right side remove the stuff you don't want shared (doc, jpg and so on)and uncheck the "share finished downloads" box in the bottom right corner, better yet remove all the folders and extensions, you get caught by making the stuff available,

In Limewire you can right click on a file in the search window and browse that users hard drive for what is available, that's how people with hundreds or thousands of mp3's get indexed and caught, if you follow the steps above, your files are not indexed and and will not be seen by anyone

Of course it cannot be stressed enough there are files on p2p networks with viruses, so if you download any programs be sure to scan them first, if you do not have an anti virus, use Kaspersky's online scanner before you run any executable, or get AVG personal it's free and updates every couple days

You may also want to go to the Tools / options and then..

Uploads / System Tray and click the radio button "shutdown immediately" so when you exit it does not simply minimize to the tray and run in the background

Advanced / System Startup and uncheck the "run on system startup" box to keep it from loading when you start your computer

On a final note click the monitor tab, if anything ever goes out of your computer you will see what it is there in the bottom pane

The software is not illegal. What you do with it is. But don't worry too much if you're outside of the U.S. :)

No, but the content you download is if they are copyright materials.

Same as driving a car is fine, until you kill someone.
