Ronnie's right. I don't think this is an accurate quotation from the teacher.
Verse is metered poetry that can also be sung.
Free verse, prose poems, haikus, are poetries that tend not to be metered and are not easily lent to song.

I think what he meant to say was "a verse can be a poem, but a poem doesn't necessarily have to be a verse". If so, he is defining verses as lines or poems that are metrical. To be sure, I think you should ask him.

hmm... i don't get it either. Unless maybe he was making a pun, like "A verse can be a poem but a poem cannot be (averse)," because only a person can be averse to something.
*shrugs* That's the only thing I can think of.
Don't be shy to ask him tomorrow what he meant by that statement. More than likely he will be pleased that you were curious enough about it to ask him to clarify.

a verse is only one line. A verse can be a poem, because it would become APART of the poem. But a verse cannot be a poem, because its only one line... get it now

A verse includes multiple lines and is considered a poem. but, a poem is not a verse. Its like in math, all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Same idea i think. By the way you're teacher sounds like he would be a gay with that line.jk
