That's kind of difficult because the nosy person might be a close friend or relative and you don't want to make waves. Look at it from a diffident perspective. You don't want to be mean, and on the other hand, you are the one who is getting the "third Degree" about personal matters which are no ones business. You don't have to be mean, but you do have to assert your rights and set boundaries . You have a choice and make statements like : " I really don't want to get into that" or " Please don't be offended if I don't answer your question because I'm not comfortable discussing ( whatever) ." or " It's a personal matter, lets skip it" If the person cannot or does not take the "hint" you are within your rights to make your statements more forceful: " I wish you would not always ask me personal questions" or " I really can't talk about personal;a matters and wish you would not ask me about (whatever). Last but not least there is always ; "Remember, curiosity killed the cat, lets talk about something else."

Just say, "excuse me, do you mind?" I don't want to be rude but, their are some things that I don't need your opinion on. Or whatever, it is that they are being nosy about.

I should think anything you say directly that they're butting in too much is going to be taken personally. You can do it subtly with body language, short answers, changing the subject, etc.

i like to say " well why do ask?"
or ask them, "what do you think/feel about -------"
that usually helps to steer the topic away...
