You could use insulation styrofoam. You can buy huge sheets from Home Depot pretty cheap.

You can use regular knives to cut it, but a styrofoam cutter (basically a heated wire) would help out a lot too. You can get them at any craft store (here's a link to show what I'm talking about: http://www.misterart.com/store/view/003/group_id/5823/FloraCraft-The-Styro-Wonder-Cutter.htm). It works by melting the styrofoam, so make sure that it's in a ventilated area (I use the stuff in my garage to make models all the time, and I've never had a problem).

The insulation foam is usually bright pink or blue, so you might want to paint it. Make sure you DON'T use spray paint. The solvent in it will melt the surface of the styrofoam and cause parts of it to deform. I found this out the hard way, when I tried to spray paint a painstakingly crafted model :( Most other kinds of paint will work fine, but you might want to try it out on a scrap peice first, just to make sure.

styrofoam(would be easy to connect pieces),white cardboard, or some sort of putty/clay? I personally think styrofoam would work OK.

make it out of clay or if it's too messy rolled up paper.
