I want to be able to set my computer so that it can turn off on it's own everynight without my having to press anything. Is this possible? I thought maybe "task manager" but that only let's me select from a list of programs to run at a specific time. Any ideas?

This utility might be of use to you:

I've use this to shutdown automatically at a certain time (like say when downloads are finished). So I can leave the machine running, while I go to sleep and it will shut down at the specified time. Very handy.

open note pad and type

@ECHO
shutdown -s -t XX

(replace the XX with the amount in seconds u want the computer to warn u)

then save it as shutdown.bat

then open start -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> scheduled tasks

then create a new task and follow the instructions when it ask u which program click browse and find the file then make it run daily at the time of ur choice, should work

I believe you have to download a utility to be able to do that at specific times. Here is a good one to use in order to get what you are looking for.

Manage your power setings,go and select a screesaver then look at the bottom portion where it says power options.
Now you can have it shut it'self down whenever you want to.
