A couple points to consider. The US has never gone to war with Cuba. Though we did sponsor an invasion by Cubans at the beginning of the Kennedy Administration. Other than the Cuban Missile Crises which was brought to mutual satisfaction and the Mariel Boat Exodus to the US of Cuban criminals. the hostilities have been mostly verbal and political. More recently we waged war with Viet Nam. But we have trade with them now and the US even voted their admission to a UN advisory committee. Fidel Castro is old and his dreams of a Marxist world over. I also read a recent report by UN investigators that report that Cuba has 4 political prisoners. Hardly qualifying them as an oppressive society on that count. Castro even offered to send medical care to the US after Hurricaine Katrina. Probably the only thing of value he could offer. We've made do with far worse tyrants. I think time to end this and re-establish trade and diplomatic relations.

Yes. I'd like open trade with Cuba.

BUT... lets work on getting FREE Cuba first.

Warm regards,
Douglas

Post Script: Cubans make the best Americans. Most Cuban Americans know what it's like to NOT be free. And you'll note few of them vote Democrat.

Free trade should be opened because it would be a good way for us to create a little more economic income. Cuba has little to offer us, except for wine and cigars. The roblem is that most of the population where children during the cuban crisis, are now adults who wont forget the past. Castro has lost most if not all of Cuba at one point, who is trying to save his face at all costs, even offering help to the US after Katrina. Having two countries so close, but so far apart does not make sense, when we have so much to offer in the way of goods, with them possible offering a great tourist attraction. I would really like to see what the new possible presidential elects would have to say on this.

On the surface, it seems like a good Idea. However, from a political standpoint it is a little more difficult. There is a powerful sugar industry in the United States, along with an equally powerful tobacco industry. Neither of these would welcome Cuban competition. Also, the Cuban population of the United States are almost universally opposed to any normalized relations with the communist regime of Cuba.

These factors mentioned are enough to make it near political suicide for Senators, or Congressmen to open that can of worms. With the leadership of a strong President, the Congress might go along with normalization of relations, but don't count on that any time soon.

The Cold War is over.

I think we have to worry more about communistic policies within our own government, especially looking at some of the Donkeys running in this upcoming election.

Free Trade, not sanctions or war; that is the way to spread wealth and freedom around the world!

That will be the one way to end communism in Cuba. As long as we are keeping a trade embargo on Cuba because of their political situation they are going to keep their heels dug in and resist any change.
But we will have to resist the tried and true American way of trying to tell them how to run their country. Simple fact you are not going to appreciate someone coming into you house and telling you how to run you household. The same holds true of other countries.
America has had one glaring defect in that regards. The government is worse than a bunch of old biddie church ladies trying to tell everyone how to run their business. For that reason we are not every well liked by other countries. Main reason we can not resist the temptation to stick our noses in their business.

It's funny, we're always hearing that wealth breeds democracy and vice-versa. I tend to agree with this. Therefore, opening up to Cuban rum and cigars would at least be a start. Besides, I think a lot of collectors are DYING to get their hands on some of those vintage cars ;)

Who cares. We all have the same biology regardless of political ideology. Humans seek and destroy. I don't care if you are communist, gay, or whatever. We are all human and should have free trade with everyone. The US is a bully to other countries. Who cares about ideology? I mean come on. Just guys in suits, bureaucrats bossing each other around.

I agree. The only reason we haven't is because of old hang-ups over the Cold War, which ended like 15-20 years ago. It's time we extend the hand of friendship to Cuba.
