Because it sounds cheaper to say $2.79.9 /gal instead of $2.80 /gal. And all those extra pennies add up. After all, imagine how many gallon a station pumps every day.

They still display it, because they are still charging you for it. 9/10ths of a cent adds up when you are selling millions of gallons of gas.

They more or less try and hide it in the advertising, since it appears to cost less, instead of rounding up to the next higher penny.

i think it is because they have to pay taxes on total purchases - so the 10ths add up;
