I've had experience with both, and here is the general breakdown of both, and which one I prefer:

Desktop - These usually have more space on the harddrive, and usually have a better graphics card. You can always upgrade on a laptop, but it gets more expensive to do that in laptops. Cons? You can't move a desktop around!

Laptop - As I said, you don't get as much HD space, and generally integrated graphics cards (which arn't as good as normal ones). But for multitasking, stuff you'd do in JH, like writing reports, or checking out myspace, or w/e you like to do on your comp, the laptop is good. Pros? It's portable!

My Opinion - I say go with the laptop. I don't have a great graphics card personally. If you have money, get something nice, over $1k. If not, that's still fine. I don't know if you game on your computer a lot. If you like the best graphics, and gaming matters to you, go with the desktop. But I highly recommend a laptop. After I got a laptop over a desktop, I don't plan on going back to a desktop any time soon, if at all.

IF you KNOW you will NEED a laptop and a desktop, get the desktop first. Desktops are easier to upgrade than laptops, so when you are able to buy a laptop, you will also be able to keep the desktop current with upgrades.

If you buy a laptop first, it will become obsolete much faster; so when you buy the desktop you will ALSO want to buy a newer laptop.

If you still aren't sure if you need both, then definitely get a MacBook. You will be able to do EVERYTHING on it.

bypass with a mac own pc. the recent OS X "Leopard" can do way better than vista in any case, and there are video games attainable for mac. Oct. twenty 6th i'm making plans on identifying to purchase the recent iMac for $1199 if it comes pre put in wth leopard. in any case, a mac is plenty greater stable than a computer, i take advantage of them the two in an identical day (macs at school, my laptop at residing house) and that i admire mac because of the fact the OS isn't a POS. residing house windows freezes each and every of the time and constantly is liable to viruses which could even wreck your no longer easy stress. Mac's are based on the unix OS, a single kernel working device, which makes them plenty much less susceptible. in case you think of roughly it, mac is a greater advantageous purchase than laptop, confident it fee slightly better than a computer, yet in the top it would additionally out. purchase a webcam, anti virus, probably spend money repairing stupid errors on your laptop, upload some desent application and you likely spent better than that on a computer, once you've only bought a mac. And the OS will take some day to verify if that, it truly is plenty much less complicated to function than a computer. And apple has a help menu in the menu bar that has laptop to Mac translations (all classes=macintosh hd, etc.)

Only get the laptop first if mobility is a major consideration. Desktops w/ 19-24" wide screens are cheap but great for movie viewing, games or running two big windows simultaneously.

Laptop has freebies. Improperly used, it gives you Carpal Tunnel syndrome (severe wrist pain) and neck muscle pain (cuz screen is not at eye level).
