We did it when I was a kid. I was too young to remember exactly which way we went. I do remember going into Little Rock.

Weather and the sights you want to see will be the determining factors in your actual route selection
If you have littlle if any experience driving in winter conditions -and you don't want to learn how on this trip- then routing it
Phoenix [PHX ] > Dallas [DFW ] > Raliegh -Durham NC[RDU] >Philadelphia [PHL ]
will add about 250 meaningless miles[2659.6 vs 2403 ] while keeping you out of the snow and ice that the shorter route would subject you to.
I can do this trip in an easy 3 days.& 2.5 if I push it
Since you're a newbie at this you can easily do it in 3.5 days .
Be safe .

if you drive straight, just gas an go routine then maybe 5 days, sleep overs along way try 8 days...gas is your most expensive thing you can share rooms motel 6 and red roof ins are the cheapest national chain, first day here to Amarillo Texas, seconded day to mighty Mississippi and Memphis you've got stop at Graceland, third day Roanoke Va. great little town quite, along way north stop at Gettysburg or Shenandoah valley, Philly only a couple states away.. maybe stop Pittsburgh first eat ice cream at Universe of Pennsylvania "great ice cream" across state to Philly..

My brother & sister-in-law drove from philly to yuma, than back to philly. It took them a couple of days to drive each way.

As long as you have a couple drivers, you should be ok. It's a lot of hrs to be on the road.

Drive safe and have fun!

Any certain reason for going to Philly? I hope whatever it is, is worth the drive.
