And there doesn't seem to be any explanation for them leaving, most of the time. Where did Monica Potter's character go? Or Cerisa (however you spell it)? Why does this show have so much trouble keeping more than three or four solid characters a season?

It is basically The Practice meets Allie McBeal. While te Practice had no trouble hanging on to its crew Allie McBeal had a lot of difficulty holding on to its crew. Why? The money. The show did not resign the missing actors but did option them to do guest shots and solo episodes. So even though, they are not regulars on the show, those characters are not gone, forever. And let's face it the two main characters are Alan and Denny and they need new women to hit on new men to fight with, so that way it does not get boring.

Yes, that drives me nuts, too. Usually it's a character I liked too like Brad or Denise.
