The height of waves depends on the shape and depth of the ocean floor. In general, the height of a wave is inversely proportional to the water depth.

Waves are caused mostly by friction with wind. In deep water waves can be barely perceptible, but once they reach shallow water, the forward moving energy of the wave form is converted to wave height. In other words, the amplitude is increased and the wavelength is decreased.

Depending on the geometry of the ocean floor when the wave reaches shore, wave height can easily increase 4x in amplitude (height).
