Actor Richard Gere thinks that the U.S. should boycott the next Olympics, to be held in China, because of China's angry protest about the Congressional Honor given the Dalai Lama and the President's attendance of this event. The President has also visited the Dalai Lama four times in the recent past.

The Dalai Lama is in exile from China and travels the world speaking of his belief in peaceful protest of totalitarian governments. China believes he is fostering problems with their relationship with Tibet, promoting civil unrest. Richard Gere, a devout Budhist, believes that the U.S. should boycott the Olympics because of China's treatment of the respected religious figure and Gere is currently visiting Washington, D.C. to promote this belief. Should the U.S. boycott the next Olympics or ignore political differences and play to win?

No. The argument about the Dali Lama is a Long Standing one... China doesn't like it- & that's too bad, -they don't have to. Sports should SUPERCEDE the Politics of Nations- & set a POSITIVE example of working together & fair play. Let China see what we stand for- on the FIELD of Competition, & let the chips fall where they may. So let the Games- Begin! :)

No. Richard Gere is hardly a barometer of what the U.S. should do politically. The fact that he would not attend (in China) due to his "beliefs" does not preclude those athletes who have trained so hard from having the opportunity to compete..
