It sounds from here that the intake valve isn't entirely closed as the spark-plug is firing. Do a quick compression check to see if the valves are closing. A stuck or burned intake will fire back through the carburetor

If this is a relatively old engine with ignition points underneath the flywheel it sound as if the points are out of adjustment ( too close together). Rule of thumb: When the points come together the coil discharges the spark to the plug. I wish we knew exactly what motor your had as I've got a book on how to set the ignition point gap and how point gap changes ignition timing. If you can get the flywheel off and the piston is .070 before top dead center a piece of tinfoil should just drag through the "almost" closed points.

Theres a aluminum key in the fly wheel crank shaft. If it is sheared or broke that throws the motor out of tim. Least bit distorted replace it. Check the air gap on the coil be sure both sides have same clerance.

That means it's not getting enough gas or at least it's a lean air fuel indication. Try spraying starting fluid into the carb air intake.
