I've always taken my car to pepboys and it seems like the brake pads only last a year at best. What's up with that? When you get a new car the brake pads last for a few years so why can't replacement brake pads last just as long? Do they use cheap pads or something? The funny part is Pepboys has a warranty for the pads but not for the cost of labor which is where most of the cost comes in. But I digress.. Can anyone tell me the best place to go to get brake pads that will last? thanks

It's an (unregulated) fact that the fast change brake places use off-shore brake rotors and very low life brake pads. It's up to you to go to an independent mechanic and specify American, Canadian or British brake rotors such as Wagner, AC-Delco, NAPA's best, Car Quest's best or EBC Slotted and dimpled units. Stay away from Auto Zone's rotors as they come from Taiwan As for pads, stay away from semi-metallic or full metallic pads as they positively eat rotors to an early death. Go on line and select Hawk, EBC, Wagner or any brand of ceramic pad. Oddly, All Toyota cars come from the factory with organic pads. They live 60,000-80,000 miles and ar by far the cleanest pads going and do no damage to the rotors. Most of the products above can be ordered from: autopartswarehouse.com, tirerack.com, partstrain.com, etc.

most large stores have 3 grades of brake pads available ...the best regular bought are ceramic ...no black brake dust with these, mid priced are good quality pads that are most commonly used, cheap pads are allways advertised as their specials these cheap pads are usually less than 20 dollars a set and often only have a 1 year warranty....napa has allways supplied us with high quality pads and rotors at reasonable prices....remember those lead paint toys from china....there are alot of auto parts made there as well..nuff said

Ask for "ceramic pads" for longer life. Also, specify slotted rotors the next time you need new rotors to extend the life of the pads and increase brake performance.

you can request better pads anyplace that you take your car to have the brakes put on, if you go to the parts-store and ask for pads for your car they will ask you do you want the cheap pads better pads or the best pads and the price is significantly different for the better pads.
