I'm having a case for my fishing rod made by a carpenter and need to choose a suitable wood. He suggested Gench, its a hard wood apparently, with a tactile veneer. Very soft to the touch and easily polished. Wood this be suitable?

Sorry, that should have read 'wood', well spotted.

The gench wood that you speak of will do just fine for the purpose intended. Gench is even a good choice for the rod itself. It is flexible, pliable, strong, and forgiving. It does seem to have a soft outer shell, but the inner fibers are tough to penetrate. The surface is quite soft due to it not being regularly revealed to the elements. Overall, many hours will be enjoyed spent polishing your gench. Sounds like you have found a competent carpenter. Good Luck.

I've never heard of gench. Even a search on it turns up nothing about gench being a type of wood.

Depending on the color you're going to eventually stain it, there are lots of woods that you can use.

For a rich, dark color, use walnut or cherry. For a medium color, use oak or hickory. And, for a lighter color, use ash or maple.

I really like the look of hickory. It has so many variations from dark to light in a single piece of wood. My kitchen cabinets are hickory and they're very nice.

Wow,,, no offense but the ROD must be a PRIZE in itself.

Fishing for 50 plus years I can relate certainly to equipment; but it being far more important than a "showcase"

I assume your interest is in aesthetics for the case.

I have a few ROD cases. 3 inch diameter bamboo; hollowed; that work fine.

I wish you success
