Ok read this:

My friend brought his camera to school (which are not allowed but we diden't lnow that). We brought it to videotape a fight. The 2 people fighting were doijng it just for fun, they diden't hate each other. Anyways we video taped it, it only lasted 10 seconds maximum. So we did that 5 or 6 days ago. My friend brough his camera to school again today but put it in his locker, no one saw him have it. The principal randomyly makes him go get the camera, they watched the whole tape and found the fight.

Can the school get in trouble for that? What if my friend had somthing private on the camera? That would be invasion of privacy. Is there any laws against what the school has done to us?

I do not know the whole story and I am not a lawyer or familiar how the law plays in this situation, but I can give my opion from experience and what I know. If it is school policy that cameras are not allowed, the principal does have a right to confiscate the camera. He does have a right to take it and review the material that is on it. You're under his "juristiction" for lack of better words, because the school is responsible for you the 7 or 8 hours that you are there. Also, it may be an invasion of privacy - but I don't know if your friend will have a strong enough argument to support that because as I said before the principal has a right to take into possession things brought into the school unlawfully. Hope that helps - and hope you're friend doesn't get too harsh of a punishment.

Ignorance of the law or rules is no excuse or defense. You said it yourself - (which are not allowed but we diden't lnow that).

They likely do have the right to review the tape, and they certainly have the right to confiscate the camera if you or your friend brought it to school against policy.

You have no legal rights to privacy on a tape you take into a public building.

you dont have any privacy at school except for in the bathroom or the locker room. if you bring anything on school property they have the right to search it. especially your locker it may be assigned to you but it belongs to the school. outsiders will be looking at your school wondering why students are not being supervised and why they have nothing else better to do than fight, but i don't think they will be in serious trouble, you and your friends might though.

No it is not an invasion of privacy. Reason? Because anything that you store in or on "school property" can be confiscated by the school, especially if it violates school policy.

Well if the asked him if he has anthing else he tapped at the school on the tape and he says no but they still watch his other stuff then that is bas. If they didn't look at anything else then it is ok, i think.

at my school teachers are allowed to look in your locker if they suspect something. they may have known if there are cameras in the hallways at your school. im not quiet sure if there is a LAW against it but you could ask an admistrator or look in the school's student conduct book.

Sorry, you don't have a right to privacy in a school locker.

There are no laws against what they did, but you can expect they will punish you.

I think it would have to do with the particular rules and regulations of the school you attend, and from the sounds of it, you are about to find out exactly what those rules and regulations are.
