When the state provides all your needs, why should you look for a job? Are we now are we coming to realize that the “benevolent paternalism” of a LIBERAL Nanny State government does more harm than good? Has anyone seen our inner cities that vote democrat in a Quid Pro Quo for more 'goodies'?

Republicans don't believe in self reliance. They believe in corporate welfare, sticking it to the middle class in order to make the top one percent rich.

Why do Neo-cons love the corporate welfare state?

When the middle class provides all your needs ($400 million) why would you actually have to work? Are we now coming to realize that sheer greed of a CONSERVATIVE government does more harm than good?

Lee Raymond did not earn that money. No one *earns* that kind of money. That was a corporate welfare giveaway, plain and simple. The administration looked the other way while Exxon and other companies robbed the middle class blind by artificially jacking up gas prices.

The Republican ideal is not self-reliance. It's corporate welfare.

Self Reliant is great while you can, but sometimes you need a hand. Especially if you are sick, old or very poor, may need some extra attention because we just never know when luck may turn and we are the ones in need.

I don't support a nanny state and don't like most ideas brought to the table by the democrats but believe we should take care of each other if we can.

Nothing wrong with being self reliant, the problem is in todays society there is a great need for people that have college educations not like in the 70's, when you could get a job an old junker and an apartment, smoke some weed and be happy.
No today you need to make 2k to get by and pray they don't firer you and thats for the ones that have guts.
The lazy kids of today expect mom & dad to just hand over all they have so they can be happy, without thinking what would happen if mom & dad just quit working,
The young of today have no Fn clue what work is, Oh have a baby mom will take care of it she has a job, I'll sit here and watch dads cable tv. Dam the baby poop in its dipper what do I do, oh hell I'll wait for momma to come home from work she know what to do and I'll just say I forgot.
These people are to lazy to get food stamps for gods sake.

Socialist like me work for our keep, unlike others.

"When the state provides all your needs, why should you look for a job?"

By that argument, why would anyone want to have a job? If you think being on state assistance is the good life, why don't you try it? Most people don't want to live that way, and do have the inventive (if not the means) to get off of it.

It is designed as a temporary measure. The fact that people get stuck in that situation is a lot more complex then "they enjoy mooching off the government". Sure, many people take advantage of the system. Same as many rich people cheat on there taxes. It is human nature.

And while you are bashing liberals, you might want to remind yourself that the only meaningful welfare reform we have had in this country was under Clinton.

You're confused. Liberals want government to serve the People, not the rich. Self-reliance is a myth. You live in a society. Societies create wealth, not individuals. Don't believe me? See how even the rich need to the state-

Penelope,

You go to extremes. You express yourself in hyperbole and stereotypes.

I'm about as "self-reliant" as they come, yet I firmly believe that it should be our goal as a society to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

We have a long way to go...

Will we ever get there? Perhaps not, but as I suggested, there is a LOT of room for improvement.

Whether you like it or not, we're all in this together, and if you think you can distance yourself, divorce yourself from the socio-economic problems of this country, you are just dead wrong.

They will always come back to haunt you and bite you in the ***.

I will never understand this forced compassion for our fellow man, if we are truly a free country we should be free to care for our own and choose to care for others not have the money ripped from our pay checks and redistributed to buy the votes of the elderly, the poor, and blacks. Never has seemed right that I should pay for the Dems to stay in office. I'm a libertarian and we have never been in power, I want a refund.

hmmm...nanny state....

Like Medicare Prescription Drug Program?

What about the Patriot Act or the Military Commissions Act?

Are those not examples of Republican-sponsered nanny state legislation, overseeing its children and making sure that they act like good citizens?

Self Reliance is losing it's effect. Most business ideas, inventions, and decision making is done by groups of experts.

The days of a lone wolf are passing pretty rapidly because no one can do it all anymore..
