The answer could have to do with the fact the attatchment of the car-seat to the actual seat is not perfectly secure.

Since an object in motion will remain in motion, when the car stops the car-seat will attempt to keep moving. If the connection between the baby-car-seat and the actual seat is broen (Belt comes undone) the carseat will fly forward. The baby will be facing backwards and the backside of the baby-seat will hit what ever is in front of it. This is better than the babys face.

Assume the baby's car seat stays securely strapped to the car's seat. When the baby is facing backwards and the car stops suddenly, the surface of the backrest of the baby's car seat provides the outside force required by Newton's 1st to stop the baby in motion.

If it were the other way around, only the straps holding the baby in its seat would apply that outside stopping force to a smaller area of the baby, meaning more pressure to those areas of the baby. Also I don't think they restrain the baby's head, do they?

isnt newtons first law any object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upod by another force?? it is better when a baby is riding in a carseat with the seat the faces backwards or leans backwards becuz if it happens to lean forward the baby can possibly hit tthe window shield when the car stops and hits something like a pole or a wall...

well if it was backward it would save it from getting hit in the face by the air bag and 2nd of all it wouldnt go flying forward if it was straped in
