Habitat for Humanity runs resale outlets called ReStores where they get donations of old, serviceable building materials and such from builders or homeowners that have remodeled or whatever. They then use the profit from the sales of the materials to fund their home-building operations. The stuff you can get there is pretty cheap and, a lot of the times, in almost new condition.
You might also look on your local craigslist for stuff that people are giving away to a good home.

ebay..
have a look at stores when they have sales/cleareances on
go to garage sales
go to goodwill, salvation army ect stores
there are also other online sites apart from ebay which list cheap household items.
also word of mouth..meaning..let people know that you are in need of something, the word will get around..and someone is bound to either give you something for free or for a really good price.
