Whenever a politician does something of this nature it is almost always PR stunt. Undoubtedly so in this case. I'm sure it was an effort on the Dalia Lamas part to avoid cringing.

The medal was endorsed by over two-thirds of both houses of Congress, and giving a medal to the Dalai Lama is probably the best thing Bush ever did.

He might have thought it was a good opportunity to piss-off the Chinese. It is not like we need their cooperation or their continued support of our economy or their pressure on North Korea. Since he had already done an equivalent for the Russians and the Turks in the last week it was probably China's turn to be shown that the US is their boss.

Tibetans hate the Chinese too. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Buddhists are one of the oldest and biggest religions in the world. Plus he is a lot smarter then Bush, he speaks like 50 languages, written hundreds of books, and is living in exile because of the communists. Buddhists are fighting commies in Asia. What else do you need.

Why not? The Dali Lama is a great man. He favors freedom of religion. He wants China to stop the purging of religions from their country and Tibet.
I might disagree with him on most things but not this.

Why wouldn't he? The Dalai Lama is a widely respected religious figure, and a voice of peace. Sure, it ruffles China's feathers, but so what?
