My mother needs to get her ex husband's social security number. Does anyone know a way to do this? I have been left on hold many times, and their website seems vague about such things.

She should have records of it on her divorce papers. I know my ex husbands is on my divorce papers. If she needs it she should just ask him for it. They should have had to file taxes together also so it would be on tax papers. There is no other way to get this information legally unless she has it on forms she has

Why doesn't she just call him and ask him? If it's a ligit reason, then I don't see why he wouldn't. But my other suggestion has already been said.. old tax returns. Even if your mother never worked, they probably filed jointly so she should have a copy of it, unless the divorce was far beyond the time you're suppose to keep tax records. If all else fails, ask whoever is needing this what you should do because you don't have any way of getting the number. They may have a way to get it for you. You didn't state what she needs it for, so it's hard to direct you in the right area.

Both mine and my husbands socials are on our marriage certificate. I don't know if this will work for your mother but she may be able to get a copy of this or possibly it may be listed on the divorce papers.

Your mother should have a divorce decree. His SSN should be in that. You can also present to your local SS office and see what the procedure would be. She may not be able to access this information as they are legally divorced.

You can't obtain the ssn from anyone but the ex spouse...unless you have some old tax receipts, bill, or something with his ssn on it.....It is against the law to obtain another person's ssn...

Hire a PI. Any person with half a brain changes theirs after the divorce is finalized.

Dig like Indiana Jones, because the only way it sounds like you'll be able to do this w/out involving the courts would be to find something w/his #'s on it.....
