The most under-rated guitarist ever has to be the late, great Danny Gatton, whom Guitar Player magazine named "The World's Greatest Unknown Guitarist." Any professional guitarist has heard the name Gatton and readily acknowledges that none are worthy. He could play it all...jazz, rockabilly, rock, blues, country. There's a live album out that Danny did with Robert Gordon, which was passed around for years between guitar circles, who all agreed it should be named "The Humbler," because every guitarist who heard this cat play was humbled. I agree with Roy buchannan..another great choice...I'd also like to add Bugs Henderson. As far as the greatest guitarists walking the face of the Earth right now, it has to be The Hellecasters...John Jorgenson, Will Ray and Jerry Donahue. untouchable by any shred heads the youngsters care to mention. I have to go with George on the two versions.

John Fogerty
Dave Davies
Pete Ham
Joey Molland
Tom Scholz
Jeff Lynne
Carl Wilson (He didn't get much of a chance to play on the Beach Boys albums, but live he was very good)

Paul McCartney (he did play some guitar, check out the solo on Taxman for one great example, House of Wax on his new album as well, and the playing on his McCartney album is fantastic, especially "Maybe I'm Amazed. He also played a lot of guitar on Band on the Run. Also great with an acoustic: Yesterday, Blackbird, Jenny Wren, Mother Nature's Son etc...)

Ace Frehlay, Prince, Nancy Heart, Mick Taylor to name a few. Most people don't consider Neil Young an awesome guitarist. But I do.

The most underrated guitarist is Jeff Beck. He is amazing. He played with Clapton and Page, and any other guitarist you can think of.
