I got some birdhouses and they are painted with acrylic paint. I want to put them outside but I think I should put something on them to keep the paint on and protect from the rain. What do I use?

My son and his friends build birdhouses for a living. they use spar varnish, but any outdoor varnish will do, like porch varnish.

The person in the paint department at the local paint store is the expert - I would suggest a clear high-gloss shellac that is designed for outdoor use. Make sure it does not turn yellow or opaque in sunlight.

If the birdhouses hang from a wire, you can also put a squirrel guard about 6"-8" over them - it keeps the squirrels out and also provides some pretty good protection from rain and sunlight.
